Permit

Posted by on 26/04/2011

A Permit in Namibia refers to an authorization paper to enter a specific area in the country. This is mostly the case for state-operated nature reserves, game parks, recreation areas and national parks.

It is not possible to buy permits online. All permits are issued by the Ministry of Environment & Tourism only. This is often confusing, as travellers think that they can get a permit also with Namibia Wildlife Resorts, however, NWR is only the public operator of different accommodation establishments in the parks. It has nothing to do with permits whatsoever.

Permits can be bought at the following places:

  • At the entrance of a nature reserve, national park, etc., however, it has in most cases to be paid in the next accommodation en-route (e.g. you get a permit when you enter Etosha through the south gate, but you pay for it at Camp Okaukuejo). This is NOT the case for Namib-Naukluft-Park and Dorob National Park (keep in mind: here only the main through-roads are permit-free)!
  • For Namib-Naukluft-Park and Dorob National Park you get the permit in Sesriem.
  • For the Naukluft section of the Namib-Naukluft-Park the permit can be bought at the small office close to the start of the Olive Trail;  this office is often not operating and thus it is strongly recommended to get the permit in Sesriem beforehand.
  • Always and for any nature reserve, national park, etc. a permit can be bought at the MET offices in Windhoek and Swakopmund.

Entering a restricted section or nature reserve, national park, etc. without having a valid permit is an offence and you might get a fine (first fine generally N$ 300) and/or you are ordered to leave the park immediately.

I would like to travel through the sperrgebiet between Luderitz and Oranjemund in June 2012. I know that one can do this if you have the permit to do so.
Where does one go or who must one contacted to obtain one of these permits.
    Tanking you in advance.

      Dear Kevin,

you need to obtain a permit from Namdeb (www.namdeb.com) at least one week in advance. They will need e.g. copies of all people entering the area. In most cases Namdeb only allows guided tours.

      Dear Travel-Namibia Team,

Concerning the permits you have to buy on the road, I have a question, for example if you want to do the Welwitschia Drive coming from Solitaire towards Swakopmund. Where can you buy this permit? Do you have an address in Sesriem?

I see here the the permits are 24 hours valid, maybe stupid question, but if you buy a permit for example Sossusvlei in the afternoon, you visit a bit and then leave the park to go the lodge, can you re-enter the park the following morning then with the same permit?

Thank you very much for your help!

        Dear Eveline,

as stated you can buy permits at the entrance gates, in your case, as there is no entrance gate you can buy it in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Sesriem. Sesriem is only made up of a petrol station and the permit office, nothing else, so you cannot miss it and there is thus no address.

        Best regards

I wonder if it’s easy to get each permit at each park or office. Do they issue the permit immediately anytime?
