A satellite phone is just like a GPS only needed in remote areas of Namibia and this is basically only the case in Kaokoveld and Khaudum. Along major roads and in towns you have normal cellphone network and this is good enough in emergency cases.

If you drive into these remote areas, we recommend renting (buying is only recommended if you use it frequently) an Iridium satellite phone, as no other network really covers all parts of Southern Africa. Some of the car hire companies rent them out.
